JOHNNY ELECTRIC

LATHE CUT RECORDS MADE IN NEW ZEALAND

Johnny Electric lathe cut records are produced by embossing a mono audio track onto a polycarbonate disc in real time with a handmade tungsten stylus.

They’re created one at a time with an experimental cutting method, using 1960s technology.

They’re not pressed, mass-produced records, so the groove geometry will differ from a traditional record, but there’s no need for a plating or stamping process, which means they can be made in limited runs.

While it won’t sound like an ‘audiophile’ stereo record, a lot of care, consideration and effort has gone into its creation. It may require the same care and consideration to be played back on your home turntable.

The modern lathe cut embossing process was pioneered by New Zealand’s Peter King in the late 1980s, and has been adopted internationally as a low-cost method of creating sonic objects for independent artists.

Johnny Electric has been refining his own version of this process since 2017, producing records with monophonic cutting heads and embossing lathes of his own design and construction.
